SAN DIEGO -- The first-round Davis Cup match between Britain and the United States will be played on a clay court in left field at baseballs Petco Park from Jan. 31-Feb. 2. While organizers havent decided if itll be red or green clay, they feel their choice of surface will give the Americans an advantage over Britain, which is expected to be led by defending Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. "The feeling is that Murray and anyone below him would have trouble on clay," Jeff Ryan of the U.S. Tennis Association said after a news conference on the infield at the downtown ballpark, home to the San Diego Padres, on Tuesday. "Its not their preferred surface. In between now and then, with Andy still recovering from his surgery and going to Australia and playing there, I dont think theyll have a lot of clay court experience. The home court advantage is right there. Thats it. Were used to getting it against us all the time. Were getting much more comfortable on clay." Organizers havent decided whether itll be red clay, which is made from crushed bricks, or on Har-Tru green clay, which is made from crushed stone. Playing the match on clay probably is a lesser of three evils decision. Murray is best on the speedier surfaces of hard courts and grass, as evidenced by his Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon this year and the U.S. Open in 2012. But hes not afraid of clay, having trained from his teen years on the slow red surface in Spain. He once reached the semifinals at the French Open, something none of the current crop of American men has come close to doing. In addition to that run to the final four in 2011 -- before losing to Rafael Nadal, which is no shame at Roland Garros -- Murray also made it to the quarterfinals in Paris two other times, in 2009 and 2012. Capacity will be about 8,000. Some 2,000 permanent seats in the left field stands will be augmented by about 6,000 more in a temporary stadium built around the court. "I think it creates a lot of excitement," said Bill Kellogg, president of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. "Davis Cup is all about crowd and people and cheering, which is not what people usually think tennis is. That national pride, I dont think it gets any greater than it does in a ballpark." Itll be the first time a Davis Cup match will be played in an open-air ballpark in the United States. The United States is undefeated in six Davis Cup matches in the San Diego area. The Britain-U.S. rivalry is the oldest in Davis Cup history, dating to the first competition in 1900, when the Americans beat the British in Boston. The United States last faced Britain in the 1999 World Group first round in England, winning 3-2 when Jim Courier rallied in the fifth match to beat Greg Rusedski in the fifth set, 8-6. Courier, now the U.S. captain, also won in five sets on the opening day of that match, beating Tim Henman in 4 hours, 12 minutes. The one drawback is that the final day of the match is Super Bowl Sunday. "We would prefer not to have it conflicting with the Super Bowl, but fact is, it will be largely decided by the time the Super Bowl starts," Kellogg said. "Its really not a huge factor in diminishing the appeal of the Davis Cup. In fact, I think it will turn into a great sports day. You get to watch what could be a dramatic finish to the Davis Cup, followed by the Super Bowl." DAngelo Russell Warriors Jersey . "Its cause for concern," Whaley told The Associated Press after the Bills held their first practice -- minus Dareus -- in suburban Rochester on Sunday night. "You always are disappointed when one of your guys isnt ready. But we think hes not far off. So hopefully sooner than later." Whaley then expressed confidence in Dareus, whose string of troubles include drug possession and reckless driving charges in two separate arrests in May. "His mindsets better once hes here," Whaley said, referring to the practice field. "And I think well find out with his actions. And I think hes ready to disprove all this stuff that hes a bad seed." The Bills placed Dareus on the active/non-football injury list on Saturday because the 2011 first-round draft pick did not report to camp in shape, coach Doug Marrone announced shortly before the start of practice Sunday. Marrone declined to say whether he was disappointed in Dareus latest setback. "I just think right now he just needs to focus on getting himself ready, getting on the field, and focusing on football," Marrone said. "And I think thats what hell be ready to do." Dareus was not present for practice and has not been spotted at the teams training camp facility since players began reporting on Friday. Under the observation of trainers, he must now work himself back into shape, and then pass the tests to be cleared for practice. This isnt a good start for a player who has encountered a series of on- and off-field problems over the past seven months. In early May, Dareus was arrested in his native Alabama and charged with possession of synthetic marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Fourr weeks later, he was allegedly racing teammate Jerry Hughes when he crashed his 2012 Jaguar into a tree near a busy intersection not far from Ralph Wilson Stadium.dddddddddddd Dareus was charged with reckless endangerment and ticketed for several traffic violations, including drag racing. The NFL could potentially discipline Dareus for his off-field troubles with a fine or suspension. After the crash, Dareus consulted with Marrone and decided to take two weeks off from voluntary practices. He returned for the teams three-day mandatory minicamp in mid-June, but did not speak to reporters. Dareus troubles date to the end of last season when he was benched for parts of the final two games for breaking team rules. Marrone had previously taken responsibility for mentoring Dareus. "I just want to make sure that Im clear that everyone understands that I believe in Marcell, and I will do everything I can to make sure that we can get him on the right track," Marrone said in June. "Im going to do everything I can to help a 24-year-old man make better decisions." And yet, its unclear whether the player is listening. Even Dareus teammates have publicly expressed concerns over his poor decision-making. Veteran defensive tackle Kyle Williams, last month, said he hoped the car crash was a wake-up call for Dareus. "Hopefully, its to a point where its kind of an epiphany, and he comes alive and turns the corner and does his best," Williams said then. LT Seantrel Henderson did not return after being escorted to the locker room an hour into practice. WR Marquise Goodwin also did not return after being escorted off.
