NEW YORK – It was only 338 days ag in this city, but at its other big league ballpark, Citi Field, that Steve Delabar was one of four Blue Jays representing the disappointing 2013 version of the ball club at the All-Star Game. On Tuesday afternoon in this city, but at its American League cathedral in the Bronx, Delabar was given the news that he was being optioned, the technical term for a demotion, to Triple-A Buffalo. “Its the business,” said Delabar. “Im not crushed or beat up. I understand the move. Its obviously a team move. They have to do this or designate someone and they dont want to do that so Im the guy right now. Theyre going to send me out.” The Blue Jays found themselves in a roster predicament thanks to two injuries that, while considered relatively minor, have left them short a bench player and a reliever. Brett Cecil tweaked his groin in the eighth inning on Friday night. He was not available for the two weekend games in Baltimore and was to be used only in a pinch on Tuesday night in New York. The ailment which affected Delabars status is Adam Linds. He fouled a pitch off his right foot in the sixth inning on Saturday. He required the assistance of a golf cart to get off the team bus on Sunday. Lind wore a walking boot and was on crutches, making the injury optically worse than the Jays say it is. “Thats just a precautionary think to take the weight off it,” said general manager Alex Anthopoulos. “The walking boot allows it to heal a lot sooner.” Lind is “day-to-day,” Anthopouloss words, and wasnt ruled out for Wednesdays game. Lets let the general manager explain. “The fact that we had the off-day, our bullpen is fresh and we needed to make a move,” said Anthopoulos. “Delabar hasnt performed as well as he did last year. He can use the consistent work. Its just a combination of things. We needed to clear up a spot to get an infielder up here and out of the relievers that were there, Chad (Jenkins) provided us a little more length right now and we can get Steve the work as well. That was the move for us, unless we were going to go the DL route.” Regardless of the reasons, this stings Delabar. He pitched to a 3.22 ERA and a 2.72 FIP in 58 2/3 innings in 2013, a key part of a strong bullpen, which was the saving grace of an injured, bad team. Now, he was at best the third right-handed bullpen option leading to Casey Janssen. Dustin McGowan took Delabars coveted eighth-inning role weeks ago and Sergio Santos, back from the disabled list, will get a chance to reestablish himself as a viable right-handed, late-inning guy. Delabars main issue has been fastball command. Hes seen his walk rate jump from 11.5 per cent last year to 14.8 per cent in 2014. Delabars strikeout rate has plummeted. He whiffed 32.4 per cent of enemy hitters in 2013 compared with 19.4 per cent this season. “Some small mechanical things that I was off line and it was causing me to be a little erratic in my command,” said Delabar. “Kind of cleaned that stuff up recently and theres really nothing to go down and really clean up; its just go down there and get some consistent innings and just work on what Ive been doing.” Munenori Kawasaki was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo and started at second base on Tuesday night. Kawasaki was hitting .276/.320/.388 and 11 of his 32 hits for the Bisons were doubles. “We dont know how long the move is going to be for,” said Anthopoulos. “Hes on the (40-man) roster, its a left-handed bat, were not facing any left-hander, will give you a good at-bat and you know all the other stuff he brings and so on. Hes someone who can grind an at-bat and the fact we dont face any left-handers, it makes sense for us. And he can also play the outfield if we needed him to.” San Francisco Giants Store .com) - Kam Chancellor bobbed his head in celebration as he crossed the goal line on his game-clinching 90-yard interception return. Abreus three-hit night extended his hitting streak to 18 games, and the White Sox routed the Detroit Tigers 11-4 on Tuesday. Abreu has hit safely in 36 of his last 37 games, and this is his second 18-game streak of the year. The only other player with two 18-game hitting streaks in a season for the White Sox was Hall of Famer Eddie Collins, who had runs of 21 and 22 games in 1920. Collins was already a seasoned veteran by that point. Abreu is in his first year in the majors. "He comes every day prepared and ready to work," manager Robin Ventura said of his 27-year-old Cuban slugger. "Its a very mature approach, and I know Ive said that before, but its true. He comes here and he gets it right away." Abreu and Adam Dunn hit consecutive home runs in the seventh, when the White Sox scored seven runs. Chicago sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and broke the game open against Anibal Sanchez (7-5) and Joakim Soria. Alexei Ramirez added a three-run double during the rally. Jose Quintana (6-7) allowed two runs and nine hits in six innings. Detroit made three errors, including two in that seventh inning. Soria made his first home appearance since the Tigers acquired him in a trade with Texas. He retired only one of the seven batters he faced and allowed his first two homers of the season. "That was probably the worst outing of my career," Soria said. "You want to make a good impression on the fans and your new team, and then that happens. No matter what pitch I threw, they were right on it. I felt fine, but I missed some over the middle, and they hit all of them." With men on first and second and one out in the seventh, Tyler Flowers singled to left, and left fielder Rajai Davis error allowed a run to score from second. That gave Chicago a 3-2 lead. Soria replaced Sanchez, and after Adam Eatons single loaded the bases, Ramirez doubled too make it 6-2.dddddddddddd Abreu followed with a two-run homer, his major league-leading 31st of the year. Dunns solo shot made it 9-2. Sanchez allowed five runs -- four earned -- and six hits in 6 1-3 innings. He struck out six and walked two. QUINTANA SHARP The Chicago left-hander has a 1.84 ERA in his last eight starts, although he hasnt always gotten much run support. That changed in a big way Tuesday. "I tried to throw all my pitches, start ahead in the count early," Quintana said. "Sometimes I fight with my delivery, especially early in the count." SLUMPING AGAIN The Tigers still lead the AL Central by five games over Kansas City, but theyve lost four in a row. This is their fourth losing streak of at least four games this season. The White Sox are now seven games out of first. TRAINERS ROOM White Sox: Reliever Matt Lindstrom (left ankle) threw batting practice to outfielder Avisail Garcia (left shoulder) before the game. Garcia has not played since early April, and Lindstrom has been out since mid-May. Ventura says the team will know more about their status when the White Sox return to Chicago for a six-game homestand that starts Friday. Tigers: Shortstop Eugenio Suarez left the game in the fourth inning with lower back tightness, and third baseman Nick Castellanos was scratched shortly before the game with an injured right index finger. Castellanos was hit with a groundball during batting practice. He and Suarez are both day to day. "Nick could have hit, and he could have played if we needed him, but we decided to play it safe," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "Hell probably be OK tomorrow. With Suarie, well just see how he feels tomorrow afternoon." ON DECK White Sox: Right-hander Hector Noesi (5-7) starts against the Tigers on Wednesday night and will try for his third straight win. He allowed four runs in a victory over Detroit on June 9. Tigers: Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (12-3) takes the mound. Hes unbeaten in his last six starts. ' ' '
